2nd Annual Providence Paddle Battle

This past Sunday on August 30, 2015, a crowd of paddlers, their friends and family, congregated at a small boat launch in Providence, RI. The Gano Park boat ramp was the site of the 2nd annual Providence Paddle Battle, a stand up paddle board race that weaves its way through the Providence and Seekonk Rivers. The event was once again hosted and organized by Kristin Kaczmarek and John Andel, owners of Paddle Board RI.

We had another beautiful day for paddlers of all abilities to compete on either a 3-mile course or a very demanding 10-mile course. With a record number of paddlers in attendance, we were excited to see the action unfold. Despite a very hot late summer day, we had people that traveled from New York, Maine, Vermont, Cape Cod, Nantucket, Connecticut and towns from all over Rhode Island. We saw a large number of people participating in their very first SUP race ever, which was what we were hoping for. We also saw some of New England’s top male and female paddlers show up to battle it out in the blazing heat over 10+ miles.

This year’s event was to benefit Clean Ocean Access (www.cleanoceanaccess.org), a non-profit group that is concerned with the safety, cleanliness and open access of the ocean and coastlines, specifically around Aquidneck Island, Rhode Island. It was a natural fit, as their mission is something we take very seriously and are very supportive of what they stand for.

The event featured a recreational 3-mile race along with an “elite” 10-mile race. Both races started just north of route 195, at the Gano boat ramp, and then entered the city, through the hurricane barrier and past the old bridge footings before turning and heading back out. The short course finished once they arrived back at the starting line. The long course continued another 3.5 miles up the Seekonk river, into a grueling headwind and outgoing tide. Once they reached the north turn buoy, they were treated to a downwind, down current ride back to the finish line.

Similarly to last year, we had very strong support from some amazing sponsors. Graphic Perspective from Wakefield, RI created the event t-shirts for the second year in a row. We also had UniLock and Raw Elements as returning sponsors. This year’s event also attracted support from two very well-known west coast companies, Infinity Surfboards and Performance Paddling (Candice Appleby and Anthony Vela’s company). The Whiskey Republic, Sigangka, TriggerPin and Essentia water were also 2015 sponsors.

Kristin and I would like to extend a sincere and huge THANK YOU to everyone that came out to support the event. We couldn’t do it without you.
