At the end the summer, John completed a journey he had been training for all year. He had signed up for the Cape Cod Bay Challenge, a 36-mile paddle from Plymouth, MA to Welfleet, MA. The event was a fundraiser for Christopher’s Haven, a non-profit organization that helps house families who have children undergoing cancer treatment in Boston. This event is so special because of the community it supports, the people that paddle, all of the volunteers that make it run smoothly and then the fact that the actual event is at the mercy of mother nature. We had epic conditions for the first 8 hours that day. Smooth seas, no breeze and lots of smiles. Then the breeze started to pick up. The last 4.5 hours were some of the toughest, most grueling hours ever spent on a standup paddle board. All 73 paddlers made it to Welfleet and were greeted by hundreds of family and friends. Truly amazing and something that will never be forgotten. This year’s CCBC is scheduled for August 17th and training has already begun!
